This post is found in Security Council Secretariat Branch (SCSB) of the Security Council Affairs Division (SCAD) in the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) at Headquarters in
New York. The incumbent reports to the Chief of the Branch.
Under the supervision of the Chief of the Security Council Secretariat Branch of the Security
Council Affairs Division, the Senior Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the
following duties:
•Formulates political affairs strategies to enhance support to the Security Council; proposes
policy directives and plan of action for immediate and long range solutions to political
problems related to the Security Council.
•Plans and implements the operational activities related to the work of the Security Council,
advises on policy questions before the Security Council, incorporates an integrated approach
that includes a rights-based dimension, conflict prevention sensitivity, and a gender
perspective into the policy, planning and operational activities of the Security Council
Secretariat branch.
•Plans, coordinates and manages the monthly programmes of work of the Security Council,
projects and activities requiring interdepartmental and/or interagency involvement and
participation.
•Supervises the preparation of procedural briefs for the use of the President of the Security
Council.
•Coordinates and directs the provision of substantive secretariat services -for the Security
Council and its Subsidiary bodies.
•Provides continuous guidance and advice to the President of the Security Council and Chair
of Security Council subsidiary bodies concerning the organization of work, status of
negotiations, conduct of business including interpretation of the rules of procedure.
•Leads and directs a work team; plans and allocates work assignments; coaches, mentors, and
evaluates staff; participates in recruitment and selection of new staff and in the development
of training programs.
•Acts as coordinator for complex coordination and support to the missions of the Security
Council.
•Represents the Security Council Secretariat Branch at round tables, workshops, seminars and
conferences, as appropriate.
•Responds to/prepares responses to comments, statements, queries of parties and manages
operations Security Council-related political affairs involving several components, including
substantive, procedural and logistical.
•Assist in the drafting and finalization of the monthly forecast and the programme of work of
the Security Council;
•Develops and maintains relations with senior government officials and advises them on
issues and policies related to the work of the Security Council.
•Performs other related duties as required.

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in International Relations, Political Science, International Law or related area. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area is required.
Experience in dealing with Member States and delegations in the context of the UN system is required.
Direct experience in the provision of substantive support to the Security Council and/or its subsidiary organs is required.
Fluency in one of the working languages of the UN Secretariat, English or French, (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
Evaluation of qualified applicants may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
